Choosing a therapist & Making contact
You should choose your therapist carefully as your relationship with them will become important to you. I think it's a good idea to know that you can look around for the right person for you.
Making that first contact can be anxiety provoking, it may help you to know that many people seek therapy. You can contact me by phone, the voicemail may be on, please do leave a message, it will be collected within 24 hours. Or you can use e.mail or the contact form on my 'Contact' page. Pick whatever suits you best, where you feel the most comfortable.
For Relationship Counselling see see the 'Issues' page.
Sessions are available Monday to Wednesday.

The first session
The first session is a chance for us to meet and to find out if we can work together. It's an opportunity to talk about your reasons for seeking therapy. We will both have questions of each other – I need to know about you and you will need to know about me. This is a mutual assessment of each other, which is purely conversational.
In this initial session we will be looking at:
You'll have time to ask questions and consider how long you want therapy for? There may be some practical details to talk through such as the fee, appointment times and confidentiality. I will provide you with my practice leaflet and contract at this first session.
I'm sympathetic to the decision making process that you'll be going through, and it's a good idea to take time afterwards at home to reflect on whether you'd like to continue.
All my sessions last for 50 minutes, and payment for this first session can be made during the session.
I have regular supervision and professional indemnity insurance.

In this initial session we will be looking at:
- what is (are) your current problem(s)?
- have you had counselling before?
- your current life and why you have chosen therapy now?
- some historical information about your life, family, your support networks
- what do you hope to gain from therapy? An agreement on the goals or aspirations for therapy?
- a discussion about whether this type of therapy might be helpful for you, or maybe to refer you to another form of therapy?

Confidentiality
Confidentiality is often one of the biggest concerns for people. The fear of others knowing what we talk about can be a hindrance to getting help. In order to talk openly and feel safe, you need to know that it will go no further.
Many people describe the relief of being able to talk, often for the first time about their worries and issues. Our relationship is confidential, and the content of the sessions remains confidential. I adhere to the BACP Framework for Ethical Practice (2016) where a few legal and professional exceptions to this are outlined. Where possible any break in confidentiality will be discussed first.

Referrals
I take referrals from private individuals and from companies on behalf of a client. For information on my training and Accreditation, please see my 'About' page.
Fees
I'm currently not taking on any new private practice clients.
Cancellations
If for any reason you have to miss a session please allow 24 hours notice, otherwise I will ask for the full session fee to be paid. This is because once we have made an agreement to work together, then that time and space is reserved for you.
Where possible, if requested, I will try to rearrange the session within the same week.
