Supervision for Therapists
Supervision is a formal arrangement for you (supervisee) to discuss your work regularly with a supervisor. The overall aim is to work together to ensure and develop the efficacy of the therapist/client relationship. The agenda will be the counselling work and feelings about that work, together with the supervisor’s support and encouragement, reactions, comments and challenges.
"Supervision is a working alliance between two professionals where supervisees offer an account of their work, reflect on it, receive feedback, and receive guidance if appropriate. The object of this alliance is to enable the worker to gain in ethical competency, confidence and creativity so as to give the best possible service to clients." (Inskipp & Proctor, 2001)
Main Focus of Supervision
- To be validated, supported and encouraged in your role as a therapist
- To receive both content and process feedback on your work
- To have a space to explore and express personal feelings that may be brought up by the work
- To ensure that you are not carrying any difficulties alone
- To receive information and another perspective regarding your work. This could include ethics, boundaries and values.
Why have supervision?
By its very nature therapy work makes considerable demands upon the therapist. It is difficult, if not sometimes impossible, to be objective about one’s work, so the opportunity to discuss it in confidence with your supervisor will be invaluable. There will also be times when you want to share and acknowledge your achievements and successes in your client work with your supervisor.
Supervisor/Supervisee Relationship
The working alliance between supervisor and supervisee is based on trust, respect and good-will. It is an opportunity for reflection and learning in an open and non-judgmental setting.
How much supervision is required?
This can vary for trainees, newly qualified or more experienced counsellors. The amount of supervision should be in accordance with BACP guidelines or your own professional organisation, proportionate in relation to the nature and amount of counselling sessions undertaken, i.e. weekly or at least fortnightly .
Self-monitoring is important, and you should follow your gut feeling if you need additional supervision. The BACP recommends a minimum of 1½ hours each month.
Sessions are available Monday to Wednesday.

Confidentiality
The content of our sessions remains confidential, with the two usual exceptions: as you are aware I have my own supervision where I reflect on my work with supervisees, and secondly where a supervisees work is a serious cause for concern. I have a leaflet on 'Counselling Supervision' which I will provide you with at our first meeting.
For any enquiries or complaints, my organization of reference is The British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and I abide by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling & Psychotherapy www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework/new_ef.php
I have regular consultative supervision for my work and professional indemnity insurance.

Fees
My fee for a supervision session is £42.00 (p.h) for individuals.
I do offer a few concessionary places, for example if you are on a low income and in training.
For organisations - please contact me for a quote.
For supervision I like to offer a pre-supervision session for potential supervisees in order to get to know each other better and to decide if we want to work together. No charge is made for this introductory session. If you have already made the choice to start supervision with me the normal fee applies.
I review my fees annually in April.
Cancellations
If for any reason you have to miss a session please allow 24 hours notice, otherwise I will ask for the full session fee to be paid. This is because once we have made an agreement to work together, then that time and space is reserved for you.
Where possible, if requested, I will try to rearrange the session within the same week.
